The story has all the elements: wit, humor, love, sacrifice, sarcasm, etc. It is now one of my favorites. Recently my husband also read it on my recommendation. He also loved it. Now he is quoting quotes to me from the book. I like it so much that I can read it again. I have a list of books that I want to have in my library whenever I have one in future.

This one has made it to that list. You become familiar with all its nooks and crannies. How to avoid that the key gets stuck in the lock if it is cold outside. Which floorboards have some give when you step on them, and exactly how to open the doors for them not to creak.

And when time no longer lies ahead of one, other things have to be lived for. If there was one thing that made people forget to dislike one, it was when they were given the opportunity to talk about themselves. The poser is jogging.

Not that Ove is provoked by jogging. Not at all. With those smug smiles on their faces, as if they were out there curing pulmonary emphysema. Is it really necessary to dress up as a fourteen-year-old Romanian gymnast in order to be able to do it? Or the Olympic tobogganing team? Just because one shuffles aimlessly around the block for three quarters of an hour?

The quote is saying that once a relationship gets past the honeymoon stage of thinking that your partner is perfect in every way, you begin to appreciate the more complicated aspects of that person that make them who they are. These characteristics are the kinds of things that you would only notice about someone that you spend a great deal of time with, which is why noticing them can make you feel so attached to that person. This quote gives an insight to how Sonja feels about Ove, and answers the question that she was asked so often, of why she chose to be with Ove when they had such opposite personalities.

All people want to live dignified lives; dignity just means something different to different people. We always think that there is enough time to do things with other people. Time to say things to them. And then, something happens and then we stand there holding on to do words like "if". Ove has probably known all along what he has to do, but all people at root are time optimists.

Every morning for the almost four decades they had lived in this house, Ove had put on the coffee percolator, using exactly the same amount of coffee as on any other morning, and then drank a cup with his wife. Ove didn't really care who was parked in the guest parking area, of course. But it was a question of principle. If it said twenty-four hours on the sign, that's how long you were allowed to stay. [Ten Quotes] A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman

The narrator wonders if Ove never forgave Rune for having a son he didn't get along with, or if neither man was able to forgive themselves for being unable to give their wives more children. He moved into the neighborhood as a child with his mother.
